Design School Experience in Florence: How It Shaped My Creative Path
by Siar Deshishku
A Defining Chapter in My Creative Journey
Spending time in Florence was a defining chapter in my creative journey. I enrolled in a course focused on interior and furniture design, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in both the artistic and technical aspects of the field. The program emphasized practical, hands-on learning, which allowed me to strengthen essential skills such as freehand sketching, working with wood, and using AutoCAD to translate ideas into precise, functional designs. This was a major part of my design school experience in Florence, offering both challenge and inspiration.
How Florence Influenced My Approach to Design
Florence itself played a huge role in shaping my approach. Being surrounded by centuries of art, architecture, and craftsmanship sparked a deeper appreciation for form, materiality, and spatial awareness. Every street and building seemed to carry a story, and this connection between place and design inspired me to think more critically about how spaces are created and experienced.
Learning Furniture Design Through Woodworking
One of the most impactful aspects of the course was working with wood, where I learned how to approach furniture design with both precision and creativity. From understanding basic joinery to shaping pieces that balanced structure and aesthetics, this process taught me patience, attention to detail, and the value of material honesty.
Developing Visual Communication and Technical Skills
Through sketching, I learned to communicate my ideas more clearly and refine them through observation and iteration. AutoCAD, on the other hand, gave me the tools to bring my ideas into a digital format — bridging the gap between imagination and execution.
Preparing for the Next Chapter in Architecture
This design school experience in Florence helped me build a strong foundation for my upcoming architecture studies. More than just gaining technical skills, I left with a renewed sense of purpose, a clearer design identity, and a deeper passion for creating spaces that are both meaningful and functional. It was a period of growth that has prepared me to take on new challenges with confidence and curiosity.
