Florence Interior Design Masters for Boffi

CELEBRATING KITCHENS

During our Florence Interior Design Masters, our Senior students designed a Temporary Bistro on the occasion of Boffi’s Anniversary. For this reason, the approach was “celebrating their kitchens”

The featured project in this article is by Mahima Amarnath, (Short Course of Interior Design) and Noor K. Mohammed (Florence Interior Design Masters).

Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN

Mahima, one of the two designers, explains to us:

“The bistro is located in Riyadh, known for its extreme heat conditions. Consequently, we made our design climate responsive.”

“Accordingly, we selected materials that are inspired by the characteristics of the desert such as cane, clay and cloth. We also used wood, stucco, and lastly terrazzo. Moreover, the furniture that we selected for this bohemian style bistro complimented the earthy material palette.”

THE HIGHLIGHT & THE FOCUS

“The highlight of this bistro is the cloth that replicates the movement of the sand dunes of the desert, suspended from the continuous horizontal beams on the ceiling.  This waves-like feature is made out of polyester cloth, which additionally acts as a sun-shading device to filter harsh sunlight.”

Mahima continues explaining: “Of course, the kitchen remained our main focus that draws one’s eyes from any space in the bistro. The steps that lead to the show kitchen are an added feature with seaters that act as a seating space or waiting area for the customers.

Lastly, the distribution of dining tables is along with a curved level which is organic in shape and reflects the movements in the ceiling.”
